Free the mind – breathe deeply – over come the root of all stress and negativity – be who you really are.

Chanting is one of the easiest ways to reconnect with our heart space, where absolute Truth resides. It is a joyful, emotionally freeing and expressive technique to over come the busy mind and experience Oneness and Peace. In these modern times where so much focus lies on thinking rather than on feeling it is absolutely necessary to realign oneself with the feeling state beyond the mind again and again.

Chanting is traditionally the repetition of Mantras; potent, ancient sound formula found in various cultures all around the world, they are not exclusive to the yogic world. Their goal is to awaken the life forces that exist in the human soul and have existed throughout eternity. The Sanskrit word ‘Mantra’ means ‘mental liberation’. This sound, or combination of sounds sets the mind free from its worldly conditioning and limitations, though we can chant in any language, anything that our heart desires.

The old masters and modern science both have found and taught the incredible power of thoughts and vibration. Maybe you have heard of Dr. Emoto’s studies about the way thoughts, words and music (all vibration) changes the crystalline structure of water. Keeping in mind that our bodies are about 70% water, we can only imagine the effect of a two-hour session of mindful repetition of healing mantras, heart songs and chants of truth and love from around the world.

The repetition allows us to ease into the chant. We can let go and express ourselves. There is a strong devotional aspect in chanting, not directed to any particular religion or belief system, but merely to the aspects of life we can all relate to: Love, Family, Nature, Friendship….
Beautiful melodies soothe the ear and the whole body and will help to express our emotions even more. As we continue chanting, we start extending the exhale, which has a calming effect on the nervous system. We basically breathe and chant ourselves to relaxation.

The moment a chant finishes is the most powerful moment. On a cellular level, we have reprogrammed our system through the Chant. We have calmed down our nervous system by changing our breathing pattern. And by aligning yourself with a group of people with a similar intention, breathing and focus you have overcome the strong belief of a separate self. This is to be experienced and cannot be understood by the mind, as the mind is strongly attached to separation. You will feel a deep sense of Oneness.

The silence after a chant feels rich and deep. A meditative, joyful state beyond the mind, beyond words. Peacefulness and bliss are streaming through you.

Have you ever noticed those people on the way to work? They’re smiling and bouncy and exude a radiance that you can’t quite explain. You’ve just passed a morning person. They’ve been up for hours experiencing the magic of the sunrise and whatever morning ritual they’ve done that day.

Some people are naturally morning people, and some have to work at it. Like me. It’s a race to get up before the mind is able to kick in and start making excuses. You know the ones. “I’m too tired. I’m not a morning person. 5 more minutes. Let me snooze one more time. Oh! But it’s STILL DARK OUTSIDE!” That may be so, but excuses hold us back from experiencing our excellence and squeezing the most juicy goodness out of the day.

Waking up to practice of Kundalini yoga at this time is a profound and energising experience, it’s a a gift you give yourself because the morning is the most MAGICAL time of day. There’s nothing like devoting time to the divine and your own personal growth at the dawn of a new day. There is a reason why profound shifts in our consciousness happen at this time. It is sunrise for your soul.

What I notice when I get up and practice Kundalini yoga is what happens after I leave the class and go about my day. I’m happier because I showed up, for myself. I feel victorious. Just making it out of bed and out of the house in the dark is a victory in itself and it’s rare to have a bad day when you start your day this way. When challenges do arise (as of course they always do) you’re ready to face them!

There’s one day in particular that I recall. I was being picked on at work by a colleague who was a bit of a bully. She challenged me and I stood up to her like I never had with anyone before. I was calm and strong and spoke directly. I called her on her behaviour, in front of an office full of people. It felt amazing to experience being in my power. It was no coincidence. I knew that day I had been able to conquer that situation because I had woken up that morning and conquered, yes you guessed it, 108 frogs.

I often say to people, yoga is more than just a physical practice. It’s a way of being. What we do in class is the ‘practice’ of yoga, but the real yoga is how you are in life itself.

In her book The 8 Human Talents, Gurmukh says ”In class we are practicing techniques, metaphorical life lessons on a physical level that we can apply to our larger lives in the world.” Greeting the new day at dawn is an automatic intention to squeeze the most juicy goodness out of the day, and the practice of yoga at this time helps us go out into the world, back to our families and our lives, being the best we can be.

“When you rise up, start by saying ‘today I am fortunate to have woken up, I am alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others, to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings, I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others, Iam going to benefit others as much as I can.” The Dalai Lama.

In a society based on masculine values, the criteria for success are: property, appearance, power and results. We concentrate on “to have” rather than “to be”, and in our struggle for equality, we confused the masculine and the feminine to the point that today admitting that there is a difference between men and women sounds like a provocation and a  preconception out of date.

Back in history, the society provided a frame of “should and should not” for marriages and relationships.  We dropped these old models and beliefs because they did not correspond anymore to the values of consumerism and power of the individual that were claimed in the 20^th century.

Nevertheless in dropping these references, men and women found themselves swimming in an ocean of apparent freedom, in which they cannot embrace their polarities and have lost the sense of their respective needs. We are so obsessed by societal role models, that we have forgotten our true identity and cannot relax in who we are.

So, how to find a balance and a new identity? Your parents’ model does not suit the transparency and authenticity of the aquarian age; yet they are the source from where we judge ourselves or from where others evaluate us. We unconsciously reproduce their life or try to do better.

How do we start building a conscious relationship? A relationship, in which we have the space to develop 4 aspects: 1) Our personal growth and connection to our soul; 2) The growthof our partner;  3) The healthy development of our creativity: babies, projects, …; and finally 4) How do we extend that to the community and start changing future society?

The workshop provides the frame where to start looking for these answers.

What an exciting time to be alive! Things are changing so fast and our every action, every thought, counts. Humankind is ONE with the world and separation is a thing of the past. There is a shift that is happening in human consciousness and everyone is feeling it.

Of course there are challenges and it is evident that the world is not yet a place of peace, love and harmony, however our beliefs are changing to a feeling of YES WE CAN make a difference, we have the tools, the desire, and the knowledge to create a better world.

We are in what the Maya call Zero Time. This can sound a little scary, however the Maya symbol for zero is a seed, not an empty circle and seeds hold great potential for new beginnings, growth and expansion – EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE if we choose to nurture these seeds of change and allow them to grow into the world we want to live in and pass on to the next generations.

21.12.12 is a gateway into the 5th Sun of Consciousness and as we step into this new era, we can choose to step out of our wounded self and into our full potential. This is the TIME of illumination, a unique opportunity to excel, grow and flourish.

2013 will be the time to nurture the seeds of change within us and within the planet. This is the time for Humankind to connect with Mother Earth in a meaningful way: to reach to the Heart of the Sky for guidance and to then bring it down to Earth, to the Heart of Mother Earth. It will be the time to come together, to share what we know, learn from each other’s experiences and join as ONE.

This is an important time to look within you, focus on your everyday life and ask: How can I transform my fear? How can I transform my destructive habits? How can I change my negative thoughts? Most importantly, how can I change my HEART? Never before has there been a time when guidance on our Spiritual Path has been more important. 2013 is the year to step into our soul’s purpose and create the peace, love and harmony we want. We are ready and are taking those first steps towards the Light.

Yogi Bhajan came to the West in 1969 and said  ’I have not come to gather students, I have come to train teachers……to help others into the frequency of the Age of Aquarius.’
 He spoke of the power of women, and the emergence of a new relationship between men and women in the new age: ‘In the Age of Aquarius the Spirit of Shakti shall prevail.’
 and he emphasized the Way of the Heart in his credo, ‘Understand through Compassion or you will misunderstand the times.’

Andy Warhol wrote: ” Either once only or every day. If you do something once it’s exciting, and if you do it every day it’s exciting. But if you do it , say twice or just almost every day , it’s not good any more” I am not sure exactly what Andy Warhol was referring to as his daily doings – but I dont think it was Sat Kriya mediation? Nevertheless after finishing the 40 day cleanse with daily yoga daily sat kriya and daily avoidance of stimulants such as alchohol coffee and most sugars- I think I get his drift and I can assure it Is exciting!

For me  this journey started with Kartha Singhs retreat in May – reluctantly I went ignorant of what I was in for (thanks Maria)….. it was earth shattering,  life changing, partly because of what I discovered and experienced but mainly because of the group that I had the privilege of sharing it with and are still sharing this ride with. We connected on a level rarely experienced I am forever grateful to Kathryn for facilitating those four days of transformation.

With similar  ignorance I started the cleanse – upon hearing of it and (again) Maria prompting – lets do it ….my little voices said –  ”no  not doing that” – “have no time” -” have no need ”  -  ”how dull ” – ” too hard ” – too long” yet again I still signed up and committed even to the juice fast.

Halfway through the cleanse something in me took control – I tried to explain to Kathryn it’s like I woke up the driver of ME through this commitment. All the little voices I discovered are like children on a bus which  have their opinions, needs and miseries – wanting to stop – getting tired – getting bored – wanting to go toilet – being hungry -wanting to go elsewhere, thinking they are no good, thinking they are the best. By waking up the driver and taking charge the bus now has direction and purpose and all the little children are happily accepting who is in charge, they even singalong from the back of the bus….

“A small daily task, if it be really daily, will beat the labours of a spasmodic Hercules” – Anthony Trollope

I would add to Trollope and say that small daily tasks of right sort can wake up the Hercules within you –  I feel such strength, direction, creativity and clarity after this commitment that I will continue for another 40 days – thank you all KM yogis and yoginis for support and love.  Wahe Guru.

Sat Nam, I live in Sydney and since 2006 I have worked at a day programs service for adults living with physical and intellectual disabilities. Two years ago,inspired by the joy and peace my Kundalini Yoga practice brought me, I thought I would try to teach yoga to a small group of people at work. The conditions my students live with include Autism, Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and all have degrees of intellectual disability and a range of physical issues. Working with the abilities and enthusiasm of the four students I watched as their physical flexibility, self esteem,confidence,tolerance and warmth towards each other grew. Two years later, these now seasoned yogis continue to open my heart, inspire and amaze me and recently two new students joined the class. In 2011 I introduced a Kundalini Meditation & Creative Writing class with a different group and the creative energy generated is so exciting to be a part of.

Autistic writers such as the amazing Temple Grandin have explained that living with Autism can feel as if your own being has no boundary, like you don’t know where you start and end; sometimes so physically sensitive that you feel ‘skinless; many sounds an assault and social contact can be overwhelming and frustrating as it is often impossible to read the expressions on the faces which surround you.

One of my students, Ben* is a highly intelligent,highly intuitive, highly autistic man in his early thirties who lives at home cared for by his elderly mother. He also has obsessive compulsive disorder and extreme anxiety which makes it difficult for him to be in community with others. He constantly yells out words and feels the need to tweak his environment by picking every speck of dust off the floor and other peoples clothes and these behaviours can be very disturbing and often frightening for those around him. His incredible intuition seems to enable him to feel and experience the emotions of others no matter how adept they are at masking them and his heart is as open and wide as the ocean.

Yoga has an amazing effect on Ben. When he comes to sit on his mat and I ask him to come into prayer pose, no matter how agitated he may be, as his hands come together you can almost see his energy centering, being pulled in and anchored by the mudra. His face relaxes, his shoulders drop and he is able to experience stillness. Ben has also had profound practical and positive experiences with Kundalini Yoga mantras. When he arrives in the morning he has usually spent an hour in a hot,cramped van crammed with the sounds and energy of 6 to 8 other people with radio blaring,peak hour traffic sounds and an often exasperated driver. By the time gets to us he is usually in a highly disturbed, noisy and erratic state.

In recent months, in an effort to help him transition into his programs for the day, I began to take him directly into a small room where he can experience a sense of quiet and containment. After a few words of greeting and some water, I ask if he would like to chant a mantra. He usually replies with emphatic nods and says either Sat Nam, Gyans(referring to the mudra,) or Yoyo- his word for Yoga! I take this as a yes and begin to chant, sometimes with a recording but more often unaccompanied. Almost immediately Ben quietens and often rests his head to one side, a beautiful, peaceful smile on his face. Sometimes he chants certain syllables but mostly he just silently surrenders to the mantra for up to 62 minutes at a time. Before this, such extended experiences of conscious serenity seemed unachievable for Ben. I just love it. With open hearts and minds, the technology of Kundalini Yoga can truly be accessible to everyone.Wahe Guru!
